What is Dental Hygine?
At Dentoworld we are passionate about the prevention of oral disease.
Tooth decay remains the number one reason for childhood hospital admissions for general anaesthesia in the UK while gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. 19 out of 20 people will experience some form of gum disease during their lifetime. Regular visits to the dental hygienist can maintain gum health and help prevent issues before they arise.
Increasing evidence indicates that poor gum health is linked to a variety of other health problems including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.*
In light of this maintaining good oral health is more important than ever.
Our hygienists have many years of experience working alongside specialists in Periodontics and Implants. They are highly experienced in the management and treatment of mild cases of gum disease to advanced periodontal disease. They are also experienced in the management of dental implants.
Our hygienists are happy to offer advice on:

What is Teeth Whitening?
At Dentoworld we acknowledge that most people have considered teeth whitening at some time or other.
Teeth may become discoloured for a number of reasons. Many consumables discolour teeth including tea, coffee, red wine, some foods as well as smoking.
Additionally, as we age, teeth naturally become more yellow. Hairline fractures in enamel and the margins of composite fillings may become more susceptible to stain too. Sometimes individual teeth that have been root filled or died become naturally darker and these may be whitened to match adjacent teeth.
These visual changes may affect your self-esteem and teeth whitening can be a very quick and effective way of improving the appearance of your teeth without removing or damaging any of the tooth surfaces.
Many patients consider whitening following extensive orthodontic treatment and prior to new restorations such as crowns or veneers enabling the restorations to be matched to the new lighter teeth.
Professional bleaching is the most usual and readily available method of teeth whitening. Under European regulations teeth, whitening may only be carried out by a Dentist or by a Dental Hygienist, under the prescription of a Dentist. These regulations are to protect you and they ensure that the clinician is trained and has the skill and knowledge to carry out the procedure without risking permanent damage to the teeth or gums.
At Dentoworld, we will be able to inform you whether you are suitable for the treatment, which teeth can be whitened, and advise you on what to expect following the procedure.
Enlighten is the whitening product used at Dentoworld and is widely acknowledged as the most effective whitening system in the world. The active ingredient in Enlighten works by increasing the teeth’s permeability to oxygen which breaks down stain molecules.
Enlighten home whitening is a straightforward procedure and will involve two appointments. The first appointment requires taking a bespoke mould of your teeth in order to create specially made trays which fit your mouth perfectly. At the second appointment, these trays will be fitted and you will be shown how to insert and remove them, how to apply the whitening gel, and how to care for your trays.
The home whitening treatment usually takes approximately two weeks and will require regular application of the whitening product.
The effects of whitening can last indefinitely. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth. Your team at Dentoworld will advise you regarding care and maintenance before you start the treatment.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a way of aligning your teeth discreetly and comfortably. Made to move your life. Not disrupt it!
Start your journey
Each patient will have a consultation with Dr Selvan Govender where you will be able to relax and discuss what you would like to change about your smile. No adjustment is too small!
After the initial consultation, you will be invited back to our practice to have scans taken of your teeth using the latest technology. It’s simple and pain free. The number of aligners you will need is personal to each patient, depending on the complexity of the case.
Once we have received your aligners, we can then book you in to have them fitted. To get the aligners working, we need to add small attachments to some of the teeth; where these are positioned is specific to each patient. The small attachments are placed on the teeth using a composite which is the same colour as your teeth so that they will not be visible. We will show you how to wear your aligners and how to keep your teeth (and your aligners) clean and healthy. You will also be given your starter kit which includes an aligners box and some cleaning crystals with instructions. We will then schedule regular appointments with you to ensure that you are happy with the progress of your smile.
How to use Invisalign
Each aligner is kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day.
-
Taking aligners out at mealtimes so that acidity from foods and drinks cannot stay in the aligners and around the teeth.
-
Cleaning your aligners can be done when brushing your teeth – simply brush your aligners gently using your toothbrush and cold water. Hot water can warp the shape of your aligners so please try to steer clear.
Cleansing tablets can be used to deep clean your aligners if needed.
What is Root Canal?
Root canal treatment is carried out when the nerve inside your tooth is dead or in an irreversible state of inflammation.
This may be due to deep decay, trauma, vertical fractures or previous large, deep fillings/crowns.
You may or may not have experienced pain with this tooth. You may sometimes have a ‘’gum boil’’ and drainage associated with it.
The purpose of the root canal treatment is to clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth in order to remove the bacteria causing the infection. Root canal treatment is a way of saving teeth that will otherwise require extraction. Research shows that it is over 80% successful. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and should not be painful. You may have multiple visits especially in cases where the root canal treatment is being redone. Root-treated teeth very often require crowns or onlays to protect them against fracture.
We carry out all our root canals using the latest techniques and materials under the dental operating microscope.
What is Dental Implant?
Dental implants provide an excellent alternative to dentures and conventional bridges for the replacement of missing teeth. A dental implant is a Titanium or Zirconia screw surgically placed into the jaw bone.
It acts as an artificial root that is used to secure a new crown. Implants can be used for a variety of purposes including the replacement of single teeth, stabilisation of dentures, or in order to fix bridges.
Implant treatment is typically 4-6 months (complex cases can take longer). The procedures are usually carried out under local anaesthetic. Implant therapy enjoys good success rates and patient satisfaction is high. The life span of implants is directly related to good maintenance. Implants should be treated like natural teeth, requiring tooth brushing twice a day and the use of interdental brushes in order to maintain good oral hygiene.
We advise you to continue with regular hygienist appointments every 3-6 months and a yearly check-up with your implant dentist where X-rays should be taken to monitor your bone levels around your implant.
What are Crowns/Onlays?
A crown/onlay is an artificial restoration for teeth that have been damaged, cracked or weakened which is causing aesthetic problems or pain and discomfort. The crown is cemented onto the remaining part of the prepared tooth, improving the appearance, shape, and function of the tooth.
Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials such as Porcelain bonded to precious metal alloys, Porcelain or All-ceramic and Gold alloy. Our treatment plans are bespoke and we will discuss the best material for your individual needs.
We will prepare the tooth to the ideal shape for the crown. This will involve removing a layer of the outer surface, leaving a strong inner core and is normally done under local anaesthetic. Impressions will then be taken of the upper and lower jaw and sent off to our dental technician’s laboratory. We now have a digital intraoral scanner and may not need to take impressions (useful for those who have a gag reflex).
We will fit a temporary crown whilst your crown is being made. Once you and your dentist are happy with the fit and appearance, it will then be cemented into place. You will need to have at least two visits, usually 14-16 days in between each visit.
Looking after your crown is very important, treat the crown as you would your natural tooth by brushing twice a day, using floss or interdental brushes in between and continue with your routine hygiene maintenance or scale and polish visits.
What are Bridges?
A bridge is a fixed restoration to replace missing teeth. In some cases, there is the option of two different types of bridge. The first is the more traditional bridge that is made by putting crowns on the teeth at either side of the gap, then joining these two crowns together by placing a false tooth in the space.
Another option is a Maryland/Resin bonded or ‘’sticky” bridge. This has metal ‘wings’ that are bonded to the back of the supporting teeth, with no drilling needed.
Having a bridge to replace missing teeth is usually only possible if you have enough strong teeth with good bone support. Bridges can be made of porcelain bonded to precious metal alloy or tough ceramic materials such as Zirconia.
Usually, 2 to 3 appointments are needed to make and fit your bridge. We will discuss the appearance and shade with you and a temporary bridge is provided whilst our dental technicians at the laboratory make your definitive restoration.
Like your natural teeth, you need to look after your bridge by brushing twice a day, using bridge floss or interdental brushes daily and continue with your hygiene maintenance or routine scale and polishes. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to use bridge floss and interdental cleaning.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are a removable prosthesis made from full acrylic or metal-based materials. Dentures replace all the natural teeth in either the upper or the lower jaw.
A partial denture fills in the spaces left by lost or missing teeth. Some partial dentures can be fastened to your natural teeth with metal clasps. These are chrome-cobalt dentures. They exhibit greater comfort, strength and retention compared to traditional acrylic dentures.
Dentures can be fitted straight after the removal of your teeth. These are known as ‘immediate dentures’. You will need an appointment before this so your dentist can take impressions of your upper and lower jaw and you can discuss the appearance of what you wish your dentures to look like. Immediate dentures mean you don’t have to be without teeth while your gums are healing. However, bone and gums can shrink over time, especially during the first six months after your teeth have been taken out. If your gums shrink, your immediate dentures may need relining, adjusting or even replacing.
Looking after your dentures will involve cleaning them every day with a hard bristle brush and anti-bacterial washing up liquid, we advise you do this over a towel or sink filled with cool water in case you drop then. We would also advise leaving them out overnight to give your gums time to ‘breathe’. You can soak your dentures overnight in water or denture cleaning solution.
You should still continue to see your dentist for routine exams.
Full denture- these can be supported by your gums or by implants- speak to us about implant-supported dentures and how this can improve your quality of life as a denture wearer.
Periodontal disease
Periodontitis (Gum disease) is infection and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth caused by bacteria creating “pockets”. There are different stages of periodontal disease and if left untreated can lead to tooth loss.
Periodontitis is common but largely preventable and treatable. Around 47% of people over 30 years old have some form of gum disease. It’s usually the result of poor oral hygiene but hereditary factors, underlying health issues and smoking may contribute to the progression and severity of the disease.
Signs and symptoms of gum disease can include:
- Bad breath or bad taste that won’t go away
- Red or swollen gums
- Tender or bleeding gums
- Loose teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- Gum recession
- In some cases, gum disease can be asymptomatic
Depending on the severity of disease, it may be necessary for you to be referred to a Periodontist/Dentist with a special interest in periodontics, this is a specialist dentist dedicated to treating gum disease. A consultation appointment will be made for the dentist to access your gums and take x-rays if needed.
Treatment
Root scale debridement is a non-surgical treatment and involves the removal of plaque, calculus, and debris from the root surface of the tooth below the gum line.
Depending on the nature and progression of your disease Root scale debridement may be carried out in localised areas – one or two teeth in one or more areas or, if your periodontal disease is more progressed and generalised, the whole of your mouth.
If the whole mouth needs to be treated, this will be managed over two or four appointments, treating either half the mouth at a time or a quarter of the mouth. Local anaesthetic will be given in the area to be treated and once numb the procedure will be carried our using both ultrasonic and hand instruments.
Following your appointment, if you have local anaesthetic, you may still be numb for a few hours immediately after your appointment. Care must be taken eating and drinking to avoid biting your tongue. Once the anaesthetic has worn off you may eat and drink as normal.
There may be some soreness and sensitivity following your appointment for a couple of days, using toothpaste that is designed to help with sensitivity such as Sensodyne ‘Repair and Protect’ or ‘Pronamel’.
Maintaining an excellent standard of Oral Hygiene is essential to the success of your treatment. Prior to root scale debridement it is advised to see our experienced hygienist to have “above the gumline” cleaning and also been shown how to effectively brush your teeth and be shown interdental cleaning aids.
Incorporating a good oral hygiene routine daily and stopping any tobacco intake will greatly speed up the improvement of your gum condition and help to prevent any future problems.
In some cases, localised Periodontal Surgery is also required to eliminate any remaining pockets.
