What is Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is carried out when the nerve inside your tooth is dead or in an irreversible state of inflammation. This may be due to deep decay; trauma; vertical fractures or previous large deep fillings/crowns. You may or may not have experienced pain with this tooth. You may sometimes have a ‘’gum boil’’ and drainage associated with it.

The purpose of the root canal treatment is to clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth in order to remove the bacteria causing the infection. Root canal treatment is a way of saving teeth that will otherwise require extraction. Research shows that it is over 80% successful. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and should not be painful. You may have multiple visits especially in cases where the root canal treatment is being redone. Root treated teeth very often require crowns or onlays to protect them against fracture.
