What is Crowns/Onlays?

Crowns/Onlays are artificial restorations for teeth that have been damaged, cracked or weakened. This causes aesthetic problems or pain and discomfort. We cement the crown onto the remaining part of the prepared tooth. As a result, this can improve the appearance, shape and function of the tooth.

Crowns can be made of several different materials. For example, options include Porcelain bonded to precious metal alloys, Porcelain or All-ceramic and Gold alloy. We provide bespoke treatment plans and discuss the best material for your needs.

Furthermore, we prepare teeth into an ideal shape for the crown. This involves removing a layer of the outer surface. Moreover, this leaves a strong inner core. We normally do this under local anesthetic. Afterwards, we take impressions of the upper and lower jaw. We send this to our dental technician’s laboratory. Now, we have a digital intraoral scanner and may not need to take impressions. For example, this helps if you have a gag reflex.

Meanwhile, we fit a temporary crown whilst yours is made. Once the crown satisfies both you and the dentist, we cement it into place. Patients need to have at least two visits, usually 14-16 days between each visit. 

Looking after your crown is very important, treat the crown as you would your natural tooth by brushing twice a day, using floss or interdental brushes in between and continue with your routine hygiene maintenance or scale and polish visits.
